EMI Consulting strives to fuel the engine of change. We focus on helping our clients pursue their clean energy goals through a broad range of research and analytical tools. We use data to understand the real-world effectiveness of programs and policies that seek to impact energy usage. As part of our team, you will be charged with managing state-of-the-art mixed-methods research and will be responsible for overseeing the execution of rigorous, creative, and insightful primary research. You will provide insights that inform strategic business decisions, helping our clients positively impact markets and develop new products/services related to energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, electric vehicles, micro grids, home automation, smart cities and future opportunities that build upon the ubiquitous Internet of Things. Your research will result in actions that change our environment and our world.



As a Senior Research Analyst, we’ll be looking to you for leadership in both managing the execution of quantitative and qualitative research efforts, and in managing interactions with clients throughout projects’ life-cycle. Your typical day may include:

  • Managing the scope, schedule, and budget of evaluations and research studies, both with clients and internal project teams
  • Presenting results to clients and helping them understand how to implement changes based on our research
  • Consulting to clients on topics such as policy changes, program design, and regulatory strategy
  • Planning innovative research and evaluation studies
  • Leading and mentoring teams of junior researchers
  • Designing effective survey and in-depth interview guides
  • Managing the fielding of complex surveys
  • Leading in-depth interviewing efforts
  • Managing the analysis of quantitative data
  • Leading qualitative coding and analysis efforts
  • Conducting focus groups or ethnographic research
  • Interpreting key themes found in the research
  • Integrating qualitative and quantitative research findings
  • Communicating results in creative and visually-compelling ways

No project is the same. Our work is fast-paced and varied, so you’ll help prioritize what we do to make sure clients get what they need, when they need it.



You have 4-6 years of experience managing research studies or other relevant projects, including experience in a consulting setting. You have successfully managed scope, schedule, and budgets of team-based projects. You have managed client relationships in a fast-paced setting with competing priorities. You have experience with utilities and/or the clean energy sector, preferably including demand-side management program evaluation. You should have experience presenting research findings to clients and helping deliver an exceptional client experience.

You have a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of research methods and design. Preferably, you have experience conducting applied quantitative and qualitative research and a solid academic background, preferably an M.A., M.S., or Ph.D. from a top-ranked university. Relevant tools include: in-depth interviews, surveys, focus groups, observational research, descriptive and inferential statistics, content analysis, data management and visualization, regression modeling, forecasting, engineering analysis, or impact evaluation experience.

What is required is that you have a passion for your work, seek out and look for fresh perspectives and insights, have a systems-thinking perspective, and want to make an impact. Excellent writing and presentation skills are also essential, as is the ability to tell a good story!
